Almost 200 brave the holiday heat
Almost 200 children braved the heat last week to attend this year’s school holiday program conducted by Oasis Christian Church. While organisers feared the warm weather would result in fewer participants, attendance actually climbed by almost 60 percent from 2017.
Each day was filled with craft, stories, music, dance and plenty of fun activities including sponge-ball, slip and slide, tug of war, basketball, relay races and sack races.
Volunteers from New Life Presbyterian Church in Sydney and both the Korean Presbyterian Church and Marion Christian Church in Adelaide worked tirelessly with many locals to make the event a great success, with everybody not just surviving the heat but ready for more at the end of each day.
Volunteers from Adelaide and Sydney paid their own travel expenses and took time from work to be part of the program.
On Saturday, the group enjoyed a lively youth gospel concert and for the first time the event concluded on Sunday with local churches combining for a packed service under the canopy at Crossways Lutheran School.
Local volunteers, groups and businesses were most helpful in the organisation of the program, with Crossways donating its facilities, Ceduna Aboriginal Corporation donating a bus and driver to help with pick-ups, Ceduna Youth Hub providing three workers, Wangka Wilurrara donating their barbecue trailer and Foodland providing goods.
Preparations are already underway for the 2019 event, although organisers are hoping the weather will not be as severe next time.
