Combating Fear with Prayer

From the book Fear attacks everyone. It’s one of the enemy’s biggest ways of trying to keep us from enjoying the life Jesus died to give us. If we give in to fear, we open the door for the enemy and close the door to God.

But rather than give in to fear, we can learn to boldly confess that God is our Helper, our Refuge, and our Stronghold. The Bible teaches us to watch and pray so we won’t give in to fear.

Matthew 26:41 says: All of you must keep awake (give strict attention, be cautious and active) and watch and pray, that you may not come into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.

This passage is reminding us to watch ourselves, and to be watching for the attacks that the enemy launches against our minds and emotions. When these attacks are detected, the best thing we can do is to pray immediately, because it's when we pray that power is released in our lives— not when we file it away to pray about later.

I encourage you to watch and pray about everything, because I truly believe that will produce more joy and peace in your everyday life. In order to live in real freedom, we need to dedicate ourselves to prayer. When we do, God’s presence increases in our lives, and His perfect love drives out fear (see 1 John 4:18).
